Permanent Residency (F-5)

F-5 is Korea's permanent residency status — no visa renewal, full freedom to change jobs, and near-equal treatment to Korean nationals. The most common route for international professionals is E-7 → F-5.

F-5 Routes for International Professionals

E-7 → F-5 (Direct employment route)

5–7 years

Most common path for professional visa holders. Requires 5 continuous years on E-7 + income and language requirements.

D-2 → D-10 → E-7 → F-5 (Study route)

8–12 years

Study in Korea first, then transition to E-7. Total time is longer but Korean degree strengthens employability.

E-9 → E-7-4 → F-5 (Skills upgrade route)

9–10 years

EPS countries only. Start on E-9, upgrade to E-7-4, then accumulate 5 years. Income requirements are harder to meet.

Point-based F-2 → F-5

Variable

F-2 residency visa (scored) can be a stepping stone to F-5. Requires earning sufficient points across multiple criteria.

⚠️ The Income Gap Problem

The E-7 minimum salary (₩31,120,000/year) is ₩11,880,000 below the F-5 income threshold (₩43,000,000/year). Many E-7 holders who start at the minimum salary will not automatically qualify for F-5 after 5 years.

E-7 minimum (2026)₩31,120,000/yr
F-5 income threshold₩43,000,000/yr
Gap to bridge₩11,880,000/yr

→ Plan salary growth from your first E-7 year. Target ₩43M+ by year 3 to meet the 3-year average requirement at the time of F-5 application.

What F-5 Gives You

  • No visa renewal — permanent status (subject to residency maintenance)
  • Change jobs, industries, or start a business without re-applying
  • Same health insurance and pension rights as Korean nationals
  • Children born in Korea can maintain Korean ties
  • Re-entry without visa for most countries that accept Korean status
  • Path toward naturalization (citizenship) after additional years
